basic65 – retro chiptune synth – is released for free

basic65download

basic 65 is a monophonic synth, inspired by the classic 80s home computer, the Commodore 64 and its legendary SID chip. Building on the waveforms and signal path of this famous chip, basic 65 adds further features and options to take things a step further.

The double arpeggiator allows complex versions of that retro 8-bit game sound and the modulation options inspire experimentation via the mod envelope and 2 comprehensive LFOs. Pulse width modulation, ring modulation and oscillator detune/sync are key ingredients in the signature sound. Throw in some pitch drift, bit drift, a sprinkle of dirt and randomisation and you have a wide range of lofi, chiptune, retro-tastic sounds at your disposal.

This version is the update to the popular basic 64, redesigned from scratch, with many improvements, new features and all new presets. basic 65 was co-developed with sink, who also made the amazing presets.

features

  • Monophonic synth in VST format for Windows based hosts
  • 3 oscillators with pulse, saw, triangle and noise waveforms
  • Pulse width can be modulated by envelope or both LFOs
  • Each oscillator can be sync’d to another and/or ring modulated by another
  • Each oscillator has its own ADSR envelope and can be routed to filter individually
  • Resonant filter with low pass, high pass, band pass and notch modes
  • 2 tempo-sync Arpeggiators in series for complex arp sounds
  • Arp tempo, range and note length can be adjusted
  • Modulation envelope can control pulse width and pitch of individual oscillators as well as filter and dirt
  • 2 tempo-sync LFOs with wide range of waveforms, including random
  • Both LFOs can control pulse width and pitch of individual oscillators
  • One LFO also controls filter and dirt, the other can modulate the depth and speed of the first LFO
  • Envelopes are non-linear and can be retriggered from zero or smoothed on each new note
  • Pitch drift models instability with variable depth and frequency
  • Options for 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 bit audio with randomising feature
  • Developed with SE 1.1, so no problems with multiple instances
  • 128 presets by sink covering arps, leads, bass, drums and lofi sounds

dirty harry – lofi synth is now free

dirty harry used to be a payware VST synth, but since I stopped selling any plugins at all, I thought I’d release it for free. Enjoy it in all its dirty, gritty, lofi glory!

dirty_harrydownload

dirty harry is an unashamedly DIY lofi synth based on the samples of my two homemade, lofi noisemakers, the Atari Punk Console and the BugBrand WOM

dirty harry offers 20 unique waveforms in all their mono/monophonic glory. For extra grit the oscillators can be sync’d or ring modulated. Fidelity can be lowered further still with reduction in sample quality, distortion and a unique ‘bad contact’ emulation. 2 tempo sync LFOs allow modulation of filter, pitch and contact, with one LFO modulating the depth and frequency of the other. There are envelopes for volume, pitch and filter, with different contours and pitch options. Throw in an arpeggiator, pitch drift and portamento and you can see that whilst it may be lofi in sound, it doesn’t lack for sound design feaures

features

  • 20 unique waveforms sampled from my homemade lofi synths, the Atari Punk Console and the BugBrand WOM
  • 3 oscillators, syncable to osc1 and ring modulatable with each other
  • Each osc can be routed to the filter independently
  • 2 tempo sync LFOs with many waveforms, can modulate filter cutoff, each osc pitch and the contact depth and wet level
  • LFO 2 can modulate the depth and speed of LFO 1
  • 2 envelopes for volume, filter or pitch, with various contours and options to modulate up/down
  • Tempo sync arpeggiator
  • Dodgy contact emulation
  • Pitch instability
  • Low quality, dirty, lo-fi options
  • 16 additional dirt types
  • 3 additional lofi options
  • Arp octave range
  • 104 presets covering Lead, Bass, Arp, Drone, Fx and Basic styles

the original truc back for download

trucdownload

truc is a multi-effect VST plug-in, with 4 banks of effects controlled by the movement of 2 pucks. The top puck controls the level of each effect bank, the bottom puck modulates any 4 of 13 parameters within the effect banks. This allows continuous morphing of the sound by moving the pucks to vary the impact of each effect bank

As well as manually controlling each puck (either by mouse or midi controller) you can lock the pucks together and/or set them to move automatically, either randomly or by a configurable LFO, all in sync with your project tempo

truc was co-developed by de la Mancha and sink for the KVR Developer Challenge 2007 where it finished in 4th place. It was replaced when truc 2 was released as payware, but now it is back available for download (since none of the payware is available anymore).

Note: truc is primarily a ‘live performance’ plugin and is written in a way as to minimise CPU use. This means the modulation you hear in real-time is not rendered in the usual way in your host. Instead, you will need to record the audio in real-time in your host or use an audio recorder plugin (see below for details)

features

  • 4 effect banks
    • dirtifier – overdrive, bit crush, sample rate, variable state filter
    • modulator – flanger, tempo sync LFO modulates auto-pan or ring mod
    • delay – tempo sync delay with reverse, ping-pong and LP filter options
    • granulator – tempo sync granulator, pitch shift and gate with random options
  • 2 independent xy pucks control;
    • effect bank wet/dry level and/or relative volume
    • any 4 of 13 effect parameters
  • set the minimum levels of the pucks to change the sensitivity
  • lock bottom puck to the top puck to control both with one movement
  • either or both pucks can be independently set to ‘auto’, which moves the puck either randomly or by a configurable LFO, all in sync with host tempo
  • seeded randomisation with option to loop
  • switch unused effect banks off saves CPU
  • master volume and wet/dry levels
  • over 100 presets, from subtle to mental
  • all controls have MIDI CC’s assigned with MIDI learn option

Rendering and real-time audio recording

The focus of truc is as a live performance tool, and minimising CPU is an important factor. To achieve this, truc has been written in a way that uses a low CPU method for modulating the pucks and effects, but the minor drawback is that this modulation is not rendered in the usual way from your host. To get technogeeky for a minute, truc uses the GUI processes for modulation, instead of the Audio processes, which means that it doesn’t work if you can’t see it on the screen (if you minimise the plugin window, you will not hear the modulation). This means Rendering or Freezing will not capture the modulations within truc either and it will sound static

Solution: You will need to record the audio from the mixer channel containing truc as real-time audio in your host, with truc visible on the screen.

Most hosts can do real-time recording in a few simple steps, recording the mixer channel output to .wav, which you then import back into your project. If your host does not support this function, you can use Voxengo Recorder to perform the same function

We appreciate that this extra step is more work for you, but if the modulation was done in the usual way, then truc would eat 50-60% of your CPU for breakfast and demand “More!”. This way, truc is useable in a live or studio situation and keeps to a strict CPU diet

basic 64 is back for free download

basicbasic 64 – click for more info

I thought I’d put back an old favourite for download since I had a few requests for it.

*** please note, this is an old synthedit plugin – it’s not 64 bit anything and it’s windows only ***

As you may know, I stopped developing plugins a while ago, and then after a catastrophic web/database corruption I stopped selling plugins altogether, but leaving the freeware downloadable. Since my hosting contract finished, I moved everything over to a wordpress site, so the freeware is still all here, and whilst I was at it, I added basic 64 back, which wasn’t available following the release of basic 65.

I still won’t be developing any new plugins and I don’t plan on selling any of the payware plugins, just thought I’d upload and oldie that had gone missing. I have a couple more oldies in the archives that I will upload at some point soon too.
